Health Services in Latin America and Asia

Health Services in Latin America and Asia PDF Author: José Núñez del Arco
Publisher: IDB
ISBN: 9781931003100
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
Whether one looks at the challenges of health reforms in Colombia and the Philippines, the impact of market mechanisms on health in Vietnam, or the success of immunization programs in Central America, examining best practices in health sector development provides practical solutions to health issues. Health Services in Latin America and Asia examines just such issues in two of the world's key developing regions. It includes case studies and cross-regional analyses of changes in basic health services, challenges for social health insurance, improvements in the equity and efficacy of health services, and changes in public and private sector roles in health care delivery. Drawing on the rich diversity of experiences, often in response to similar problems, this book offers an opportunity to learn from mistakes made and successes achieved.

Banking on Health

Banking on Health PDF Author: Shiri Noy
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319617656
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
This book addresses the puzzle of why the World Bank was unable to effect sweeping neoliberal health reforms in Latin America from the 1980s onward. Through the use of quantitative regional data together with interview and archival data collected during fieldwork in Argentina, Costa Rica, Peru, and Washington DC, this book argues that the answer to this puzzle is twofold. First, the World Bank has not promoted a uniformly neoliberal, monolithic agenda in health. Second, countries’ autonomy and capacity in this sector shape how the World Bank is involved in reforms. Finally, the book distinguishes neoliberal ends from means in health sector reform and traces changes in “banking on health” over time.

Public Health and the Modernization of China, 1865–2015

Public Health and the Modernization of China, 1865–2015 PDF Author: Liping Bu
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1317541359
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
This book, based on extensive original research, traces the development of China’s public health system, showing how advances in public health have been an integral part of China’s rise. It outlines the phenomenal improvements in public health, for example the increase in life expectancy from 38 in 1949 to 73 in 2010; relates developments in public health to prevailing political ideologies; and discusses how the drivers of health improvements were, unlike in the West, modern medical professionals and intellectuals who understood that, whatever the prevailing ideology, China needs to be a strong country. The book explores how public health concepts, policies, programmes, institutions and practices changed and developed through social and political upheavals, war, and famine, and argues that this perspective of China’s development is refreshingly different from China’s development viewed purely in political terms.

Digitalization and the Welfare State

Digitalization and the Welfare State PDF Author: Marius R. Busemeyer
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0192848364
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 433

Book Description
This volume explores how digitalization--in different forms--affects the welfare state. Digitalization is likely to have a lasting impact on work, welfare, and the distribution of income. It will radically transform not only social risks in health, education and the labour market, but also the means by which these risks are addressed. The volume studies how digitalization affects policies as well as the underlying power relationship between actors, i.e. the politics of the welfare state. The volume brings together internationally renowned welfare-state scholars to identify - the socio-economic challenges that result from rapid technological change; - the ensuing political conflicts and struggles in the domain of welfare state reform broadly defined; - how these changes challenge and shape existing labour market and welfare state arrangements. Overall, the volume explains the potential and real political and policy responses to these challenges, grasps the contours of future developments, and reflects on whether the current wave of technological change might promote the emergence of a new paradigm of welfare state policy-making. The rapid and accelerating pace of technological change has potentially radical ramifications for the welfare state that demand an engagement with possible future scenarios. The authors therefore adopt a forward-looking perspective. Based on this approach, the volume uniquely offers a theoretically informed empirical basis for social science and public debates about the long-term implications of the digital revolution for the welfare state, covering a broad range of policy areas such as education, pensions, labour market policies, tax policy, and health care.

In 2017Q3, the economy grew by 1.7 percent year-on-year, amid household consumption boosted by strong wage growth and recovering investment. The current account deficit has narrowed, reflecting growth in services exports, as well as recession and real exchange rate adjustment in 2015–16. Medium-term growth is expected to be about 2 percent, limited by negative demographics, weak credit conditions, and lagging competitiveness under the state-centric economic model.
