Lily the Lucky Duck is a true story written by Gail Spotts while visiting family in Minnesota, the Land of Many Lakes. The story tells of how loving, nurturing, and caring can help people as well as animals. Speaking softly and watching a tiny duckling respond to voices after being found in the tall grass by a pond is a story to share with others. Good things happen when we reach out to others with compassion.

In need of a vacation, private detective Amos True and his companion, Polly St. Jough, accept an invitation to relax aboard Otto Laird's slightly illegal gambling ship, the Lucky Duck. Joining them are movie starlet Clair de Lune, enthusiastic writer Ruth Booth, and a number of other suspicious characters. But True soon learns about Laird's ulterior motive for inviting him and Polly out to sea. The Lucky Duck has become haunted by the ghost of Captain Henry Robbins, a smuggler who years ago commanded the ship. When first one guest and then another is murdered, the ghost of Captain Robbins is the main suspect. Can Amos, with the help of Polly, uncover the real culprit? Another great off-beat mystery by the author of Dangerous Hardboiled Magicians!

Research and development in the pioneering field of quantum computing involve just about every facet of science and engineering, including the significant areas of mathematics and physics. Based on the firm understanding that mathematics and physics are equal partners in the continuing study of quantum science, Mathematics of Quantum Computation and Quantum Technology explores the rapid mathematical advancements made in this field in recent years. Novel Viewpoints on Numerous Aspects of Quantum Computing and Technology Edited by a well-respected team of experts, this volume compiles contributions from specialists across various disciplines. It contains four main parts, beginning with topics in quantum computing that include quantum algorithms and hidden subgroups, quantum search, algorithmic complexity, and quantum simulation. The next section covers quantum technology, such as mathematical tools, quantum wave functions, superconducting quantum computing interference devices (SQUIDs), and optical quantum computing. The section on quantum information deals with error correction, cryptography, entanglement, and communication. The final part explores topological quantum computation, knot theory, category algebra, and logic. The Tools You Need to Tackle the Next Generation of Quantum Technology This book facilitates both the construction of a common quantum language and the development of interdisciplinary quantum techniques, which will aid efforts in the pursuit of the ultimate goal-a "real" scalable quantum computer.

In this text we present a technical overview of the emerging field of quantum computation along with new research results by the authors. What distinguishes our presentation from that of others is our focus on the relationship between quantum computation and computer science. Specifically, our emphasis is on the computational model of quantum computingrather than on the engineering issues associated with its physical implementation. We adopt this approach for the same reason that a book on computer programming doesn't cover the theory and physical realization of semiconductors. Another distinguishing feature of this text is our detailed discussion of the circuit complexity of quantum algorithms. To the extent possible we have presented the material in a form that is accessible to the computer scientist, but in many cases we retain the conventional physics notation so that the reader will also be able to consult the relevant quantum computing literature. Although we expect the reader to have a solid understanding of linear algebra, we do not assume a background in physics. This text is based on lectures given as short courses and invited presentations around the world, and it has been used as the primary text for a graduatecourse at George Mason University. In all these cases our challenge has been the same: how to present to a generalaudience a concise introduction to the algorithmic structure and applications of quantum computing on an extremely short period of time. The feedback from these courses and presentations has greatly aided in making our exposition of challenging concepts more accessible to a general audience. Table of Contents: Introduction / The Algorithmic Structure of Quantum Computing / Advantages and Limitations of Quantum Computing / Amplitude Amplification / Case Study: Computational Geometry / The Quantum Fourier Transform / Case Study: The Hidden Subgroup / Circuit Complexity Analysis of Quantum Algorithms / Conclusions / Bibliography

This book provides an introduction to the basic ideas and concepts of quantum computation and information for both undergraduate and graduate students. The book starts with the quantum bits and the entangled states which turn out to bring revolutionary ideas in information theory. This book is self-contained and unified in its description of the cross-disciplinary nature of this field. The book aims to provide intuitive and transparent ideas of the subjects, and is not strictly mathematical. Quantum mechanics and mathematical tools (especially, number theory) are explained with many examples and illustrations. The students can obtain practical problem-solving ability by solving the exercises at the end of each chapter. Detailed solutions to all problems are provided at the end of the book.

Teaching quantum computation and information is notoriously difficult, because it requires covering subjects from various fields of science, organizing these subjects consistently in a unified way despite their tendency to favor their specific languages, and overcoming the subjects' abstract and theoretical natures, which offer few examples of actual realizations. In this book, we have organized all the subjects required to understand the principles of quantum computation and information processing in a manner suited to physics, mathematics, and engineering courses as early as undergraduate studies. In addition, we provide a supporting package of quantum simulation software from Wolfram Mathematica, specialists in symbolic calculation software. Throughout the book's main text, demonstrations are provided that use the software package, allowing the students to deepen their understanding of each subject through self-practice. Readers can change the code so as to experiment with their own ideas and contemplate possible applications. The information in this book reflects many years of experience teaching quantum computation and information. The quantum simulation-based demonstrations and the unified organization of the subjects are both time-tested and have received very positive responses from the students who have experienced them.

This textbook introduces quantum computing to readers who do not have much background in linear algebra. The author targets undergraduate and master students, as well as non-CS and non-EE students who are willing to spend about 60 -90 hours seriously learning quantum computing. Readers will be able to write their program to simulate quantum computing algorithms and run on real quantum computers on IBM-Q. Moreover, unlike the books that only give superficial, “hand-waving” explanations, this book uses exact formalism so readers can continue to pursue more advanced topics based on what they learn from this book. Encourages students to embrace uncertainty over the daily classical experience, when encountering quantum phenomena; Uses narrative to start each section with analogies that help students to grasp the critical concept quickly; Uses numerical substitutions, accompanied by Python programming and IBM-Q quantum computer programming, as examples in teaching all critical concepts.

Quantum computing is on the horizon, ready to impact everything from scientific research to encryption and security. But you don't need a physics degree to get started in quantum computing. Quantum Computing for Developers shows you how to leverage your existing Java skills into writing your first quantum software so you're ready for the revolution. Rather than a hardware manual or academic theory guide, this book is focused on practical implementations of quantum computing algorithms. Using Strange, a Java-based quantum computer simulator, you'll go hands-on with quantum computing's core components including qubits and quantum gates as you write your very first quantum code. Purchase of the print book includes a free eBook in PDF, Kindle, and ePub formats from Manning Publications.
